Ayathan School The real History Unveiled

Dr. Ayyathan Gopalan Memorial English Medium High School popularly known as "Ayathan School" is a recognized school located at Chintavalap, Jail Road in the heart of the city of Kozhikode. 
This school was established in memory of Rao Sahib Dr. Ayathan Gopalan who was a well-known renaissance hero and social reformer in Kerala. This is the only school in Kerala today under the Brahmo Samaj, functioning in a Brahmo Samaj building.
Dr. Ayathan Gopalan was the founder of the Brahma Samaj and Sugunavardini movements in Kerala, a well-known figure of that times.
He established the first branch of Brahmo Samaj in 1898 at Chinthavalap, Jail Road, Kozhikode, Kerala and was registered under a trust named as "The Calicut Brahmosamaj Trust, Malabar". Founded by Dr. Ayyathan Gopalan, the trust includes his children, grandchildren and their descendants and his followers. During 1950s-60s, Ram Mohan Cultural Center started functioning under the Kozhikode Brahmo Samaj. A large library and a play-school were run under it. Kindergarten was started in 1965 with the most modest of 15 children initially.
In 1966, sanction was obtained from the government to start LP school and it was named as the "Brahma Samaj School". The natives of Calicut called it as "Samaj School" this name got popularized amoung the public. In 1969, it became a complete English Medium L.P.school. The Calicut Brahma Samaj Trust  renamed this school as Dr. Ayathan Gopalan Memorial School in memory of the great renaissance leader and social reformer of Kerala Rao Sahib Dr. Ayathan Gopalan. The school is located in the heart of the Calicut city, due to the impossibility of acquiring more land, government excempted from the minimum site requirement and temporary recognition was given. In 1991 permanant recognition was obtained for U.P section and in 1995 it was upgraded as the high school. The first batch of S.S.L.C was presented in March 1998 comprising of 3 students.The school got the permanant recognition of high school from the government in 1999.The school still function as a well-known school in Kozhikode. It is the only existing school in Kerala which run under Brahma Samaj and in its premises.

This school is located on a 73-cent corner plot which was donated by Rarichan Moopan a wealthy landlord of that times to Calicut Brahmosamaj at Chintavalap in the city of Kozhikode and is owned by the Kozhikode Brahma Samaja Trust. 
It is located in Chintavalap near the District Jail, Kozhikode and Palayam, the heart of Calicut.
K.P. Keshava Menon and Srinivasan inaugurated the first building of the school in 1966. The first headmistress of this school was Annie Gopalan. 25 teaching staff and 7 non-teaching staff are working here. "Love and Serve" is the motto of the school and the school aims at all-round development of the students.
