Real History of Ayathan School

Ayathan School:

Ayathan school is one of the prominent school which is situated at Kozhikode, Kerala. This is the only remaining school in Kerala which run under the patronage of Brahmosamaj and situated over the premises of Calicut Brahmosamaj.
Ayathan school is managed under the trust named as the Calicut Brahmosamaj Trust,(Malabar). The trustees include Dr. Ayathan Gopalan's children, grandchildren, great grand children and their successors and also include the members of Calicut Brahmosamaj.
Ayathan school is located at Chinthavalapu junction, Jail road, Kozhikode,(Calicut).
Rao Sahib Dr. Ayathan Gopalan a great renaissance leader and social reformer of Kerala who was the founder of Sugunavardhini movement and the leader and propagandist of Brahmosamaj movement in Kerala. 
As part of his reformation In the year 1893 he instituted Brahmosamaj in Kerala for the first time.
In the year 1898 it gained prominence after establishing a branch of Brahmosamaj at Calicut (Kozhikode). Kallingal Madathil Rarichan Moopan who was a wealthy landlord and a reknowned personality of Calicut donated this land at Chinthavalapu junction, Jail road, Calicut for the construction of Brahmo mandir.
The construction of Brahmo Mandir was done by collecting money from the natives of Calicut and from the prominent personalities which lived during those times. It was open to public in the year 1900 and was inaugurated by the Zamorin King of that time, His Highness Mana Vikraman Ettan Thampuran.
This Brahmomandir still exists at Calicut and "Ayathan school" is being run within this Brahmomandir Hall under Brahmosamaj trust.
After the decline of Reform movement's post independence and emergence of the freedom movement's the activities of Brahmosamaj movement came to a decline. Many followers of Brahmosamaj moved to Freedom movement and some moved and joined with revolutionary movement's.
The Brahmosamaj mandir still opened to public post independence and weekly prayer meeting's were conducted without a fail. Children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and followers of Dr. Ayathan Gopalan conducted this prayer meeting's every Sunday's. All the family members and fellow members of Calicut Brahmosamaj joined this weekly prayer meeting's.
Ayathan Gopalan was the lifetime President of Calicut and Alappey Brahmosamaj. 
After the Death of Dr. Gopalan his second son Dr. Capt. Rev. Ayathan Buvanadas became ths President and his third son Ayathan Devadath became the secretary of Calicut Brahmosamaj.
There was a library functioning inside the Calicut Brahmosamaj which was one of the biggest library in Kerala during those days and the librarian was Ayathan Balagopal fourth son of Dr. Gopalan. The treasurer of Brahmosamaj was Dr.Ayathan Chandramohan, first son of Ayathan Gopalan.
Rest of the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, in laws and the followers of Calicut Brahmosamaj constituted as the members of Calicut Brahmosamaj.
During 1950's under the Calicut Brahmosamaj Trust, Ram Mohan Cultural Centre and library was set up, under which cultural activities such as Dramas, Plays, Acting workshop's, Music etc were conducted amoung the public. The Hall was given to public for conducting other mass debates and meetings. Later on during '60's, a Play school was opened under the Ram Mohan Cultural Centre and library, and the huge library was opened to public. 
The play school which was opened under the Ram Mohan Cultural Centre was upgraded to Kindergarten in 1965 with the most modest of accomodating only 15 students initially.
In 1966, sanction was obtained from the government to start LP school and it was named as the "Brahma Samaj School". The natives of Calicut called it as "Samaj School" this name got popularized amoung the public. In 1969, it became a complete English Medium L.P.school. The Calicut Brahma Samaj Trust  renamed this school as Dr. Ayathan Gopalan Memorial School in memory of the great renaissance leader and social reformer of Kerala Rao Sahib Dr. Ayathan Gopalan. The school is located in the heart of the Calicut city, due to the impossibility of acquiring more land, government excempted from the minimum site requirement and temporary recognition was given. In 1991 permanant recognition was obtained for U.P section and in 1995 it was upgraded as the high school. The first batch of S.S.L.C was presented in March 1998 comprising of 3 students.The school got the permanant recognition of high school from the government in 1999. The legacy of Ayathan School and Brahmosamaj still echoes in the heart of every people of Calicut.
