Ayathan Alok was born in Calicut into the Ayathan family, an aristocratic noble family of Malabar that has played a significant role in Kerala’s history, especially in medicine, social reform, and education. He is the great-grandson of Dr. Ayathan Gopalan, who was instrumental in founding the Sugunavardhini Movement (1900), the Depressed Classes Mission (1909), and the founder, leader and propagandist of The Brahmo Samaj movement (1893) in Kerala. Ayathan Alok is the grandson of Dr. Mandhakini Bai, a doctor and social activist who worked with the Sugunavardhini Movement and Brahmo Samaj to protect women's and children's rights, and of Ayathan Devadath, who was also a Brahmo. He is the son of Ayathan Karamchand Dath and Mattangot Vijayalakshmi. The Ayathan family also includes other notable figures, such as Dr. Ayathan Janaki Ammal, Kerala’s first woman doctor and surgeon, who was Ayathan Gopalan’s youngest sister and a prominent social activist associated with the Sugunavardhini Movement and Brahmo Samaj.

Ayathan Alok is the author of two notable historical book's "Appan: Oru Ormapusthakam," the first comprehensive biography and memoir of Dr. Ayathan Gopalan written in Malayalam and "Darsar: The Untold Story Of An Unsung Hero," in English. His book is considered a major contribution to Malayalam literature and Kerala’s social history, providing a detailed account of Dr. Gopalan’s reformist work, including efforts to promote women’s education, eradicate caste discrimination, and support marginalized communities.
