കേരളത്തിലെ സാമൂഹ്യനവോത്ഥാന നായകരിലൊരാളായിരുന്നു റാവു സാഹിബ് ഡോ. ആയ്യത്താൻ ഗോപാലൻ (Rao Sahib Dr.Ayathan Gopalan) (3 മാർച്ച് 1861 - 2 മേയ് 1948). "ദർസർജി" എന്നും "ദർസർസാഹിബ്" എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന നവോത്ഥാനനായകൻ. (Image of the old building of Ayathan Hospital) Ayathan Clinic & Dispensary was founded by Dr. Ayathan Gopalan at Calicut next to his residence as part of his social reform activities. He is the founder, leader and propagandist of the Brahmosamaj movement in Kerala. He established the first branch branch of Brahmosamaj in Kerala at Kozhikode in the year 1898. In the year 1900 he further extended his reform activities by establishing Sugunavardhini movement along with his wife Kallatt Kausallya Ammal. She was the backbone and the strength behind the Sugunavardhini movement. In the year 1924  Dr. Gopalan retired from the post as the Superintendent of Kuthiravattom Mental Hospital. Dr.  Ayathan Janaki Ammal  (1878–1945) was the first women doctor and surgeon of Kerala. She acclaim with the name and title as the first Malayali lady doctor and surgeon of Kerala. She is the sister to Dr. Ayathan Gopalan, renowned renaissance leader and social reformer of Kerala, founder of the Sugunavardhini movement (1900), Depressed Classes Mission (1909) and the founder leader and propagandist of Brahmosamaj(1898) in Kerala. She was born into "Ayathan" family (aristocratic family of Malabar) at Thalassery, as the daughter of Ayathan Chandhan and Kallat Chirutha Ammal. "Ayathan" is the family clan name of the great renaissance leader and social reformer of Kerala Rao Sahib Dr. Ayathan Gopalan. Dr. Ayyathan Gopalan Memorial English Medium High School popularly known as "Ayathan School" is a recognized school located at Chintavalap, Jail Road in the heart of the city of Kozhikode.  This school was established in memory of Rao Sahib Dr. Ayathan Gopalan who was a well-known renaissance hero and social reformer in Kerala. This is the only school in Kerala today under the Brahmo Samaj, functioning in a Brahmo Samaj building. Dr. Ayathan Gopalan was the founder of the Brahma Samaj and Sugunavardini movements in Kerala, a well-known figure of that times.
